We are in september, but I still remember this multicell, since it was the first and (luckly) the only hail event in this area in the 2011 storm season. The storm was packing heavy rain and some hail. Max hail size was around 1,5cm in diameter. The whole troposphere was quite moist, and the shear was not really impressive, which prevented larger hail.
It began with towering Cu to the S/SW, which were rising very fast into Cu Cong and later into Cb. The development was quite explosive.
A look at the base told me, that it is time to reposition.
Above me, a cumuliform anvil was trying to develop.
I went up the road, to have a better view at the updraft zone, which was getting better defined.
The scud clouds were really rushing into the base, and showing the strenght of the updraft.
The core was getting fully loaded, reaching the mature stage, so the updraft was unable to hold all the percipitation much longer. At this point, the storm was still inflow dominant.
Here a shelf was trying to form, but the terrain is not really favourable, so it didnt happen. It really takes a very strong storm to make a shelf cloud in this complex terrain.
The storm reached the mature stage, and it began to release all of its load. I was hit with the right part of the storm (the one that was trying to develop a shelf).
At this point, I was well in the lightning strike zone, and since I live 1050m above sea level, pretty close to the cloud base and not to mention the forest around me, there were just to many CG´s for me to be comfortable outside when the storm came closer and passed me.
After the storm: (here the storm was already outflow dominant)
I also made 2 wide panoramas with Autostitch program.
And the radar. I marked the area where I live, and from where I was taking this photos. The storm passed me from the SW/W.
Here is also a video I recorded with my phone:
The quality of the photos is quite bad, since i was taking them with my phone (Nokia N95). I will buy a decent camera before the 2012 storm season begins. :)
I guess the quality is fine, but not really good enough for forums. :) I have to buy a decent camera before 2012 storm season begins, because it looks like there will be more (or atleast stronger) thunderstorm activity than this year, across N Slovenia and South Austria. :)
